It is with profound sorrow and deep faith in the resurrection that I share the news of the passing of our Holy Father, Pope Francis. The Catholic Diocese of Wichita joins the universal Church in mourning the loss of a shepherd whose humility, compassion, and unwavering commitment to the gospel have touched countless lives across the world.

Pope Francis was a man of great faith, a servant of God who walked closely with the poor, the marginalized, and those in need of mercy. His pontificate was marked by a profound emphasis on love, mercy, and justice–reminding us all of our Christian duty to care for one another, especially the least among us. His words and actions challenged us to live authentically as disciples of Jesus Christ, fostering a Church that is open, inclusive, and welcoming.

From his first moments on the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica, when he humbly asked the people to pray for him before giving his blessing, Pope Francis demonstrated his pastoral heart. He emphasized the beauty of simplicity, the importance of mercy, and the call to encounter Christ in every person, regardless of background or status. His leadership was not merely about governing but about guiding us to a deeper understanding of God’s infinite love and compassion. I feel a particular bond with the Holy Father, who called me to be a bishop, the Bishop of the Diocese of Wichita.

Throughout his pontificate, Pope Francis tirelessly advocated for peace, justice, and the care of our common home. His encyclical Evangelii Gaudium, “The Joy of the Gospel,” inspired the Church to embrace a renewed spirit of evangelization, calling us to live and share the good news with enthusiasm and authenticity. This has inspired me, as your bishop, to strive to lead us to be missionary disciples living in a new apostolic age. His witness to the gospel was not confined to words but was powerfully displayed through his actions–embracing the sick, comforting the sorrowful, and journeying to the peripheries of society.

As we grieve his passing, let us also celebrate his remarkable legacy of faith and service. Pope Francis taught us to encounter others with love and mercy, to seek reconciliation and peace, and to live out the gospel with joy. His vision for the Church as a field hospital, tending to the wounds of humanity, will continue to inspire us as we carry forward his mission.

I ask the faithful of the Diocese of Wichita to join me in praying for the repose of Pope Francis’ soul. May our loving Father welcome him into the eternal joy of Heaven, where he will behold the face of God whom he served so faithfully. 

In these days of mourning, let us also pray for the College of Cardinals as they gather to elect a new successor to St. Peter. May the Holy Spirit guide them in choosing a shepherd who will continue to lead the Church with wisdom, courage, and love.

To honor the life and legacy of Pope Francis, I invite all parishes in our diocese to celebrate Masses for the repose of his soul. Let us gather as a community of faith, united in prayer and gratitude for the gift of his pontificate.

Con profundo dolor y una profunda fe en la resurrección, comparto la noticia del fallecimiento de nuestro Santo Padre, el Papa Francisco. La Diócesis Católica de Wichita se une a la Iglesia universal en el duelo por la pérdida de un pastor cuya humildad, compasión e inquebrantable compromiso con el Evangelio han tocado innumerables vidas en todo el mundo.

El Papa Francisco fue un hombre de gran fe, un siervo de Dios que caminó de cerca con los pobres, los marginados y los necesitados de misericordia. Su pontificado se caracterizó por un profundo énfasis en el amor, la misericordia y la justicia, recordándonos a todos nuestro deber cristiano de cuidar unos de otros, especialmente de los más pequeños. Sus palabras y acciones nos desafiaron a vivir auténticamente como discípulos de Jesucristo, fomentando una Iglesia abierta, inclusiva y acogedora.

Desde sus primeros momentos en el balcón de la Basílica de San Pedro, cuando pidió humildemente a la gente que rezara por él antes de dar su bendición, el Papa Francisco demostró su corazón pastoral. Destacó la belleza de la sencillez, la importancia de la misericordia y la llamada a encontrar a Cristo en cada persona, independientemente de su origen o condición. Su liderazgo no consistió simplemente en gobernar, sino en guiarnos hacia una comprensión más profunda del amor y la compasión infinitos de Dios. Siento un vínculo particular con el Santo Padre, que me llamó a ser obispo, el obispo de la diócesis de Wichita.

A lo largo de su pontificado, el Papa Francisco abogó incansablemente por la paz, la justicia y el cuidado de nuestra casa común. Su encíclica Evangelii Gaudium, «La alegría del Evangelio», inspiró a la Iglesia a abrazar un renovado espíritu de evangelización, llamándonos a vivir y compartir la buena nueva con entusiasmo y autenticidad. Esto me ha inspirado, como vuestro obispo, a esforzarme por llevarnos a ser discípulos misioneros que viven en una nueva era apostólica. Su testimonio del Evangelio no se limitaba a las palabras, sino que se manifestaba poderosamente a través de sus acciones: abrazando a los enfermos, consolando a los afligidos y viajando a las periferias de la sociedad.

Mientras lloramos su muerte, celebremos también su extraordinario legado de fe y servicio. El Papa Francisco nos enseñó a encontrarnos con los demás con amor y misericordia, a buscar la reconciliación y la paz, y a vivir el Evangelio con alegría. Su visión de la Iglesia como un hospital de campaña, que atiende las heridas de la humanidad, seguirá inspirándonos mientras llevamos adelante su misión.

Pido a los fieles de la Diócesis de Wichita que se unan a mí en la oración por el descanso del alma del Papa Francisco. Que nuestro Padre amoroso lo acoja en la alegría eterna del Cielo, donde contemplará el rostro de Dios a quien sirvió tan fielmente.

En estos días de luto, recemos también por el Colegio Cardenalicio, que se reúne para elegir al nuevo sucesor de San Pedro. Que el Espíritu Santo les guíe en la elección de un pastor que continúe guiando a la Iglesia con sabiduría, valentía y amor.

Para honrar la vida y el legado del Papa Francisco, invito a todas las parroquias de nuestra diócesis a celebrar misas por el descanso de su alma. Reunámonos como comunidad de fe, unidos en la oración y la gratitud por el don de su pontificado.

Concédele, Señor, el descanso eterno y que brille para él la luz perpetua. Que descanse en paz. Amén.
